What is A Girls Night In
Most people think that Girls Night In is about supporting the cause of Breast Cancer and when I got involved many years ago that's what I thought too! However after many years of being involved in the program during October I have come to see Girls Night In is a celebration of who we are as women. Its a night to grab your girlfriends and stay 'IN' and have some fun! However, in recent years girls around Australia have been hitting the town to paint it PINK!
While the night is all about BEING A GIRL! There is a serious side to the night too. Traditionally, the concept of the night was to invite your girlfriends over to just enjoy each others company and donate the money you would spend on a night on the town to the Girls Night Incampaign.
The funds raised go to the Australian Cancer Foundation via the Girls Night In campaign to support women in the fight against cancers that particularly affect women. Namely Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Cervical.
Your Host . . .
Hi my name is Debbie Chilton, when I first got involve in Girls Night In I thought holding a "girls night" was a great excuse to get the girls together and help raise much needed funds. The first year I hosted, a Girls Night In, we had a simple pamper night. No sponsors, no fuss. A five dollar cover charge simply went to the Queensland Cancer Council.
Over the years, I have realised the very serious side to girls night in, as a number my girls friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer over the years. Sadly the age of women being diagnosed seems to be getting younger and I was shocked to read about a young girl of 10 years being diagnosed. Cancer does not discriminates, it invades the young the old, women and men a like.
But with all the challenges that cancers that affect women, there are strides being made and victories being won. Cancer treatments can now be tailored to individual patients, support services continue to grow and I have grown to admire the many organisation that raise funds and support women and men as the battle to fight cancer. I now count it as my greatest prilivage to stand shoulder to shoulder with other women to Fight Like Girls!
